  • A budget tyre inflator. Entry-level digital inflators start around Rs 1,200 and go to about Rs 2,500. Genuinely useful in Indian conditions. Genuinely unromantic.
  • A coffee-table car book. Photography books on Group B rally, Porsche history or F1 seasons sit in the Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,500 band. Great if you know his exact obsession. Terrible if you guess.

Why a scale model works better than another accessory

Hot Wheels and Matchbox are excellent at what they do. At Rs 150 to Rs 400 nothing else gives you that much car, and the Hot Wheels premium lines have real collector value. But a Rs 200 1:64 car is a stocking filler, not a gift you hand over on an anniversary.

Bburago and Maisto own the mid-market globally and their licensing is the reason. If he wants a specific Ferrari 812 or a specific Aventador SVJ, they probably make it and we do not. Their weakness in India is inconsistent stock and paint quality that varies batch to batch.

Above Rs 8,000 you enter Mini GT, Tarmac Works, AUTOart and Kyosho territory. These are better models by every measure: photo-etched details, real rubber tyres, opening everything, paint you can inspect under a lamp.
