Scissor Doors on Diecast Cars: How They Work and How to Open Them

Scissor doors swing up instead of out. Here is how they work on a diecast model, how to open them without stressing the hinge, and what to check before you buy.

Short answer: scissor doors are hinged at the front of the door and swing straight up instead of out. On a diecast model they are the opening part people notice first, and the one that needs the most care. Lift from the bottom rear edge of the door, never from the mirror or the window frame, and stop when you feel it reach its natural limit. On a good model the door moves smoothly, holds its position and closes flush with the body.

Key takeaways

  • Up, not out: scissor doors rotate upward from a hinge near the front wheel.
  • Lift low and at the back: push from the lower rear edge of the door, not the mirror.
  • Stop at the limit: forcing past the natural stop is how hinges loosen.
  • Check the close: a good door shuts flush with no gap or rattle.
  • Bigger scale helps: at 1:24 the doors are larger and easier to handle than at 1:64.

What are scissor doors?

On a normal car the door swings outward on hinges at its front edge. A scissor door uses a hinge at the front too, but it rotates upward, so the door ends up standing almost vertical beside the windscreen. The name comes from the way the open doors look like the blades of a pair of scissors. They became a signature of Lamborghini's V12 cars and are still used on the Revuelto today.

Scissor doors are not the same as gull-wing doors, which are hinged on the roof, or butterfly doors, which swing up and out at an angle. On a scale model the difference matters because each style uses a different hinge, and each needs to be opened in a slightly different way.

How scissor doors work on a diecast model

On a diecast car the door is usually a separate zinc-alloy piece fixed to the body with a small pivot at its front end. When you lift the back of the door, it rotates around that pivot. Better models add enough friction for the door to stay open at any height without dropping back down. Cheaper ones often flop shut or wobble because the pivot is loose or made of soft plastic.

Because the door is metal, it has real weight. That is part of why a good scissor door feels satisfying to open, and also why the hinge takes more stress than a plastic door would. Read why zinc alloy matters for more on what the metal body changes.

How to open scissor doors without breaking them

  1. Hold the car by the roof and base, not by the other door.
  2. Put a fingertip under the lower rear corner of the door. This is the strongest part and gives the most leverage.
  3. Lift slowly upward. Do not pull outward, and never lever it open from the wing mirror.
  4. Stop when it stops. If you feel resistance, that is the limit. Pushing past it bends the pivot.
  5. Close it the same way: lower it gently until it sits flush, without snapping it shut.

If the model will be handled by a child, show them this once. Most damage to opening parts comes from pulling doors sideways. Check the age label on the box before giving any model with opening parts as a gift. Our guide to diecast cars with opening doors covers normal doors, hoods and boots too.

What to check before you buy

  • Smooth movement: the door should rise in one steady motion, without grinding.
  • It stays up: a good door holds its open position.
  • Flush close: no visible gap or step between the door and the body when shut.
  • Metal door, not just a metal body: the door itself should feel weighty.
  • Clear listing: the seller should say which parts open and show real photos of them.

How to keep scissor doors working for years

Display the car with the doors closed most of the time and open them for photos or for show. Dust the hinge area with a soft dry brush, because grit in the pivot is what makes doors stiff. Keep the model out of direct sun and damp spots during the monsoon. Our diecast care guide has more, and how to display diecast cars shows how to show off a car with its doors up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between scissor doors and gull-wing doors?

Scissor doors are hinged at the front and swing straight up. Gull-wing doors are hinged on the roof and lift upward from the centre of the car.

Are scissor doors on diecast cars fragile?

Not if they are opened the right way. Lift from the lower rear edge and stop at the natural limit. Most damage comes from pulling the door sideways.

Why does my scissor door not stay open?

The pivot has lost friction, usually from dust or from being forced past its limit. Clean it with a dry brush and open it gently from now on.

Which scale is best for a car with scissor doors?

1:24 or larger. The doors are bigger, easier to grip and show more detail than at 1:32 or 1:64. See our 1:24 vs 1:32 comparison.

Does the Aetron Revuelto have opening scissor doors?

Yes. The 1:24 Revuelto has scissor doors, working headlights and a pull-back motor.
